How Many Players Are on a Soccer Team?

On the field: 11 a side

Law 3 of the Laws of the Game sets it out plainly: a match is played by two teams of not more than eleven players, one of whom must be the goalkeeper. That gives you 22 players on a soccer field during normal play.

Add the officials and the field is busier than the count suggests. A standard professional match has a referee and two assistant referees on the field, with a fourth official on the touchline, so around 25 people are inside the boundary at any moment.

The eleven breaks down as one goalkeeper and ten outfield players. How those ten are distributed between defence, midfield and attack is the formation — 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 3-5-2 and so on. The numbers in a formation always add up to ten, because the goalkeeper is assumed.

Squad and roster sizes

"How many players on a soccer team" has a second answer, because the eleven on the field are drawn from a much larger group.

Player and substitution counts on this page follow Law 3 of the IFAB Laws of the Game. Squad sizes and substitute limits are set by each competition and vary.

The registered figure is where competition rules bite. The Premier League, for instance, caps senior squads at 25 players, of whom at least eight must be home-grown; players under 21 sit outside the cap entirely. That single rule shapes a great deal of transfer business, because signing a 26th senior player means removing someone else first.

How many substitutes are allowed

Five per team in most competitions you will watch. This began as a temporary measure during the congested 2020 fixture calendar and was made permanent in the Laws of the Game 2022/23, which came into force on 1 July 2022. Strictly it is an option rather than a universal rule — the Laws let each competition organiser decide, and most top-level competitions have taken it up.

There is a catch that is easy to miss: the five substitutions must be made across a maximum of three substitution opportunities, with half-time not counting against that limit. Making two changes during the same stoppage uses only one opportunity, so managers tend to swap players in pairs rather than one at a time.

Two further wrinkles apply in the professional game. Unused substitutes and unused opportunities carry over into extra time, and competitions may permit an additional substitution and opportunity on top; separately, most top competitions allow permanent concussion substitutes outside the normal limit. Recreational and youth leagues are far more relaxed — many allow unlimited changes and let substituted players return, which the professional game does not.

The minimum: seven players

A team may not continue with fewer than seven players. Drop below that — through red cards, or injuries once substitutions are exhausted — and the referee abandons the match, with the outcome then decided by the competition's disciplinary process rather than on the field.

In practice this is rare but not unheard of, and it explains behaviour that otherwise looks strange. A team reduced to eight will often abandon any attempt to attack and defend in a deep low block, because a ninth dismissal would end the game entirely.

Youth and small-sided soccer

Younger age groups do not play 11v11, and the counts below are the common US Soccer and English FA progression. The exact ages vary by federation and league.

The reasoning is straightforward: fewer players on a smaller field means every child touches the ball far more often. Dropping eight-year-olds into a full 11v11 game tends to produce a crowd around the ball and several children with nothing to do.

How the 11 are arranged

One goalkeeper and ten outfield players, split across three broad bands. The most common shape in youth and amateur soccer is 4-4-2 — four defenders, four midfielders, two forwards.

• Goalkeeper (1). The only player permitted to handle the ball, and only inside their own penalty area. Some play as a sweeper-keeper, defending space well outside the box.
• Defenders (usually 3–5). Centre-backs through the middle, full-backs or wing-backs on the flanks.
• Midfielders (usually 3–5). Ranging from a defensive holding midfielder to an attacking number 10.
• Forwards (usually 1–3). A target man, a poacher, or a false 9 who drops into midfield instead of leading the line.

Players are also referred to by number — the 6 is the holding midfielder, the 9 the centre-forward, the 10 the creator. Those numbers describe roles rather than the digits on the shirt, and they are used identically in soccer and football.
