Privacy policy

This policy covers BALLKNW and the Gaffa game on this site (together, "the site", "we", "us"). It explains what data is collected when you visit, and the choices you have.

Playing without an account

You can start playing without signing up, and we don't ask for your name, email address or any other personal information to play. A guest's game saves are stored in their browser and are not sent to us. After two days of play, starting a new season needs a free account.

Accounts (optional)

You can create a free account with your email address and a password, so your career is saved to your account and can be continued on another device. If you do, we store your email address, your password in hashed form (we never see it), and your game saves. That is all. We use your email only to confirm your account and to send password reset links you ask for; we do not send marketing and we do not sell or share it. You can sign out at any time, and you can ask us to delete your account and saves by emailing ball.know.support@gmail.com.

Cookies

Analytics and ads load for every visitor by default, wherever you are. You can turn analytics cookies off at any time with the Cookie settings link in the footer of any page (choose Essential only).

That choice is stored in your browser's local storage (key bk_consent) so we can remember it. This is the only "essential" storage the site uses.

Analytics

Unless you turn them off, we use Google Analytics and PostHog to understand which features and pages are used, so we can improve the games. This is aggregate usage data (e.g. which game was opened, which formation was picked, whether a game was completed), not anything that identifies you personally.

Google Analytics runs in Google's consent mode. If you choose "Essential only" it is not allowed to store anything on your device, and reports your visit only as an anonymous, cookieless page count that cannot be tied back to you or followed between visits.

We also use Vercel Web Analytics, which counts page views regardless of your choice. It sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device at all, so there is nothing to switch off: it cannot identify you or follow you between visits.

Advertising

The site is funded by ads from our ad network partners (currently Monetag, EZMob and Google AdSense), which load for every visitor. They and their partners may use cookies or similar technology to serve and measure those ads, including ads based on your prior visits to this or other sites. Your cookie choice controls our own analytics (PostHog and Google); it does not switch the ads off. You can limit ad tracking with your browser's privacy settings.

The Gaffa Android app

The Gaffa app for Android (package com.ballknw.gaffa) runs the same game from files stored in the app. Your careers are saved on your device. If you create a free account, your email address and your saves are stored with our database provider (Supabase) so you can play on other devices, exactly as on the website.

The app shows ads from Google AdMob. AdMob may collect your device's advertising ID, approximate location derived from your IP address, and information about how you interact with ads, in order to show, measure and personalise ads and to prevent fraud. In the UK, EEA and Switzerland the app asks for your consent through Google's consent form before personalised ads are shown; you can reset your advertising ID or opt out of ad personalisation in your Android settings. The app has no cookie banner, analytics or other ad networks.

Deleting your account

In the game (on the website or in the app), open More → Delete account. This permanently deletes your account and your cloud saves straight away. Careers saved on your own device are not affected. You can also email us at the contact address below and we will delete it for you.

Data from third parties

Player names, squads and ratings used in-game are drawn from public football datasets, including the Fjelstul World Cup Database (CC-BY-SA 4.0). These are historical sporting records, not personal data about you.

Children's privacy

The site is general-audience football trivia content and doesn't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes to this policy

We may update this page from time to time as the site changes. Check back here for the current version.
