What Is a Regista?

A regista is a deep-lying playmaker who operates from a position in front of the defence, typically as the deepest midfielder. His job is not to win tackles or cover ground — it's to receive the ball from the centre-backs and distribute it intelligently, setting the rhythm of the entire team's play.
What it actually looks like
The regista sits between the defence and the midfield, almost always in the centre of the pitch. He's the player who drops deep to collect the ball when the centre-backs have it, then turns and picks out a pass — short, long, diagonal, whatever the situation demands.
He doesn't run box-to-box. He doesn't make late runs into the penalty area. He stays deep, stays available, and keeps the ball moving. His job is to control the game's tempo: speed it up when the opportunity is there, slow it down when the team needs to regroup.

A regista can be a defensive midfielder, but a defensive midfielder is not necessarily a regista. The difference is what they do with the ball. One recycles possession; the other creates from deep.
