FM26: How to Develop Youth Players
Youth development is the key to long-term success — here's how to turn raw talent into world-class players.
Developing youth players in FM26 takes good facilities, good coaching and the right training focus — but the single biggest factor is game time. Young players improve by playing competitive football, and nothing substitutes for it.
The development pipeline
- Recruitment — find the best young players through scouting and your youth intake
- Academy — bring them in and give them a clear pathway
- Training — develop the attributes their position actually needs
- Game time — competitive minutes, at your club or on loan
- First team — integrate them gradually, not all at once
The key factors
| Factor | Importance | How to improve it |
|---|---|---|
| Game time | Very high | Play them, or loan them somewhere they will start |
| Training facilities | High | Ask the board for upgrades after good seasons |
| Coaching staff | High | Hire the best specialists you can afford, and enough of them |
| Training focus | Medium | Individual focus on the attributes their role needs |
| Mentoring | Medium | Pair them with experienced professionals with good personalities |
The loan system
Loaning young players out is one of the best development tools you have — but only if it is done properly. A loan to a club where the player sits on the bench is worse than keeping him in your own reserves.
- Pick a club at a level where he will start every week
- Use the playing-time agreement rather than hoping
- Recall him if he is not playing by the halfway point
- Avoid loaning to direct rivals, who will use him against you
How loans work in the real game is covered in our loan system explainer.
Training focus
Individual training focus is the lever most players ignore. Set it by role, not by weakness alone: a young striker needs finishing, composure and off-the-ball movement; a young midfielder needs passing, vision and stamina.
Physical attributes develop fastest in the late teens, technical ones through the early twenties, and mental ones for far longer — so weight the focus accordingly by age.
When to promote
Don't rush young players into the first team. A player promoted too early and then dropped can stagnate for a season. The safest pattern is squad rotation first — cup matches and late substitutions — then a regular starting role once he is holding his own.
Common questions
How do you develop young players in Football Manager 26?
Give them competitive game time, good facilities and specialist coaches, set an individual training focus for their role, and mentor them with the right senior professionals.
Is it better to loan out young players or keep them?
Loan them out if they will start every week somewhere competitive. Keep them if they will get real minutes with you. Bench time develops nobody.
What matters most for youth development in FM?
Game time. Facilities and coaching set the rate of improvement, but a player who does not play barely improves regardless of either.
When should you promote a youth player to the first team?
Gradually — cup matches and substitute appearances first, a regular role once performances hold up. Promoting and then dropping a young player costs a season of development.
Do youth facilities or coaching matter more?
Both matter, but junior coaching and head of youth development shape the intake's quality, while training facilities and senior coaches shape how fast recruits improve afterwards.
