Board expectations
The board sets expectations at the start of each season. They usually cover league position, cup performance, European qualification where relevant, financial targets, and sometimes youth development.
These are the targets you are actually assessed against — not your own ambitions, and not the fans' hopes. A manager who finishes eighth when asked for mid-table is safe; one who finishes fourth when the board expected the title is not.
Managing expectations
- Be realistic in transfer and contract talks — do not promise European qualification to sign a player
- Communicate early — request a lowered expectation before the season, not after a bad run
- Deliver the stated target — exceeding it is nice; missing it is what gets you sacked
Club vision
The club vision is the long-term plan, and it is usually more specific than people expect. It might cover playing style, youth development, financial management, and the kind of players the club wants to sign.

When things go wrong
If you miss expectations you will be under pressure, and the sequence is predictable: a warning, a period of grace, then a sacking. What buys time is everything other than results — board confidence built by meeting vision objectives, a healthy financial position, and supporters who are on side.
