FM26: Player Roles Explained
Football Manager has dozens of player roles — here's what they all mean and when to use them.
Player roles in FM26 define how a player behaves on the pitch — their positioning, movement and decision-making. Picking the role that matches each player's attributes matters more than which formation you choose.
Goalkeeper roles

Attacker roles

| Raumdeuter | Drifts into space in the box rather than holding a position |
How to choose the right role
- Match the role to the attributes — the role screen highlights the ones that matter; a target man who cannot head the ball is not a target man
- Match roles to each other — two players who both want the same space will get in each other's way
- Duties balance the side — attack, support and defend duties matter as much as the role name
- Experiment — the same player can transform in a different role, and it costs nothing to try

How do you pick the right role for a player?
Check the attributes the role highlights and compare them with the player's. If the key attributes are weak, the role will not work regardless of overall ability.
What is the difference between a role and a duty?
The role sets what a player tries to do; the duty — defend, support or attack — sets how far up the pitch they do it and how much risk they take.
What is a Raumdeuter in Football Manager?
German for "space investigator" — a wide forward who ignores conventional positioning and drifts into gaps in the box to finish, modelled on Thomas Müller.
Can you play a player out of position in FM?
Yes, but with a performance penalty that shrinks as they retrain. Check the position familiarity indicator before committing to it in an important match.
